Ooooh La, La…PEARLS!!!

I love them and use them often in my designs. I feel they add a timeless appeal to any piece, even when mixed with other materials.
A pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls occur.
The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and therefore, the word pearl is often used as a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable.
The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but they are extremely rare. Cultured pearls make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Pearls from the sea are valued more highly than freshwater pearls. Imitation or fake pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but the quality of their iridescence is usually very poor, and generally speaking, artificial pearls are easily distinguished from genuine pearls.
Here are more interesting facts about pearls:
  • A pearl is only found naturally in 1 in every 10,000 oysters.
  • Cultured Pearls are formed with human intervention but placing an irritant into an opened mollusk or oyster.
  • Mother of Pearl is the thick nacre that coats the inner shell of the oyster or mollusk.
  • I am positive every woman owns pearls… which piece is your fav?

    • Pearls are so classic and beautiful! I have a necklace strand given to me by my mother for college graduation. I've had them for over 10 years and will continue to wear them throughout my lifetime!!!

    • Wow! That must be special. My favorite has to be a 3 strand white pearl necklace. So timeless and elegant.
