Your Ego Is Crafty

Why do some of the most intelligent people sabotage their own success? We all have an ego.
It’s made up of certain beliefs about our personality, talents, + abilities. Your ego, if left unchecked, can cause you to act out in ways that are uncharacteristic of who you believe yourself to be.
We’ve all reckoned with a bruised ego. We’ve all felt like a failure, embarrassed, withdrawn. We’ve stopped speaking up, avoided interactions with others, and quit taking on new responsibilities. In the end, only hurting our chances of advancing further in our lives or career.
Your ego is crafty. You don’t always know when it’s taken over.
Your ego can create an echo chamber. You might think you’re right, but if you’re the only voice speaking, who’s to say?
Instead of throwing walls up, consider what you stand to gain when you let yourself be vulnerable. When your defenses are up, it precludes learning + personal growth.
The ego often appears most strongly in situations where we stand to learn the most.

Fighting the Stigma of Depression

I choose every day to live an empowered life. To me, that means owning my life and my story.

Most people who live with mental illness have, at some point, been blamed for their condition. They’ve been called names. Their symptoms have been referred to as “a phase” or something they can control “if they only tried.”

Stigma causes people to feel ashamed for something that is out of their control. Even worse, stigma prevents people from getting the help they need.

I fight stigma by talking about what it is like to live with depression.

Don’t give up. Believe. You can. You will.

“If your heart is broken, make art with the pieces.”
― Shane Koyczan

Resilience touches the parts of us that are hurting. The parts that are trying, the parts that may believe you’re not enough for this. The parts of us that believe our future is not just determined by the stars, but by our own sweat.

I don’t know what you’re going through right now. If you are reading this to pump yourself up, maybe you had a business setback, maybe you’re in a difficult relationship.

You just may be scraping the bottom of your soul for the inspiration that you’re sure is hiding somewhere, and maybe this is it …

There will always be dirt thrown at you. Shake it off and step up.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn’t worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So the farmer asked his neighbors to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, when the donkey realized what was happening he cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up.

As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone’s amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!” Unknown

To Thy Ownself Be True

For a long time, I always felt like an outlier, weird, an outcast, misunderstood, strange, and many other words used to describe those of us who are different. Those who never fit in or went with the crowd. I re-read Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown over vacation and reassessed how every chapter desmistified a lie I used to tell myself about who I believed I was -at some point in my life.

As Maya Angelou and Brené wrote, I belong every place. I belong no place. I do 100% belong to myself.

“You are only free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” Maya Angelou
